“Just pick a stable career.” “Find a good company and you’ll be set for life.”

But that’s not really how it works anymore — and you already know that.

Hardworking people who thought they had a “stable job” are still getting laid off.
Person counting cash and using a calculator to work out a budget
Companies are squeezing budgets and cutting positions to save money.

And the cost of commuting and childcare keeps eating into every paycheck.

So what do you do when you need work that fits your life — not the other way around?

This is exactly where I found myself…

One minute I was a successful office manager at an employee benefits company. The next minute I needed to be home to care for my husband, who’d become disabled and unable to work.

I knew there had to be something I could do from home to provide for my family. And it occurred to me — I had transcription skills from way back in my early career.

But could I really make a living doing this from home?

There are so many sketchy work-from-home “opportunities” out there. It seemed almost too good to be true — but I was willing to try.

And GUESS WHAT?

I was hired as a transcriptionist right away — and I’ve supported my family with my transcription work ever since.

Maybe you feel like you have to choose between work or family.

Maybe you need a solution that can start working for you now.
Hand writing a checklist in a notebook
Maybe you know you have skills but aren’t sure where to start.

Over more than a decade in this career — and through some big shifts in the industry — I’ve collected the dos and don’ts that have helped me thrive as a top transcriptionist.

Yes, AI has changed parts of the transcription world. But the work that requires a real human — accuracy, judgment, sensitive recordings, multi-speaker audio — is still very much in demand. And that’s the work this mini-course prepares you to do.

(Psst… it’s a completely free way to get started on your own path to work-from-home success.)
“Since graduating, I’ve worked for three companies. There’s so much work out there, and trust me — AI will never replace a person doing transcription. I use AI tools to help, but they’re never 100%. It’s a tool for transcriptionists, not a replacement. Transcribe Anywhere gave me the freedom to work the hours I choose and still spend time with family.”
— Kimberly LaRue

“I enrolled while completing my 25th year of teaching. I needed a flexible schedule for my family. After finishing the courses, I applied to an agency in April 2024 — they were ‘very impressed’ with my test files and put me on my favorite work: law enforcement. I’ve been with them 17 months and plan to stay as long as possible.”
— Kelli Harvey
“Within two weeks of passing the final exam, I was contracted by an agency. Later a court-reporting agency found my resume and hired me — I’ve been with them nearly a year and I LOVE the work. They let me choose how much work I accept, so I can walk my dog, check in on my parents, and get dinner on the table. No nights or weekends. I couldn’t be happier.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this free transcription course really free?

Yes — completely free, no credit card required. You enter your name and email, and all seven lessons are delivered to you. Transcribe Anywhere does offer paid certification courses (General Transcription and Legal Transcription) for people who decide they want to pursue transcription as a career, but the mini-course itself is a no-strings introduction designed to help you decide whether this path is right for you before investing in anything.

What happens after I sign up?

As soon as you enter your name and email, we send you the first lesson right away — no waiting and no credit card. From there, the seven short lessons arrive one at a time so you can work through them at your own pace instead of all in one overwhelming batch. Each lesson builds on the last, from what transcription really is, through what you can realistically earn, to how to find your first work. You can unsubscribe at any time, and there is never an obligation to buy anything. The mini-course exists to help you decide whether this path fits your life before you invest a dollar.

Is transcription still a real career in 2026 with AI tools available?

Yes — but it has evolved. AI has largely taken over rough, low-stakes transcription where casual accuracy is acceptable. What hasn’t changed is demand for skilled human transcriptionists on work that requires real accuracy: legal proceedings, sensitive recordings, multi-speaker audio, poor-quality audio, heavy accents, and technical vocabulary. Those clients aren’t going away. They need humans who understand context, can verify what was actually said, and can be held accountable for the final transcript. The transcriptionists thriving today are the ones positioned for that work, not the lower-end work AI commoditized.

Do I need prior experience to start transcription?

No formal experience is required to begin learning, but certain skills shorten the learning curve: comfortable typing speed, strong grammar and punctuation, attention to detail, and the patience to listen carefully. If you have worked in writing, editing, administrative roles, or any career where precision with words mattered, you have a head start. Lesson 4 of the mini-course is a 10-factor self-assessment that helps you see honestly whether transcription is a fit, and what to work on if you are close but not quite there yet.

Is Transcribe Anywhere legitimate, or is this another work-from-home scam?

It’s a fair question, because there are a lot of sketchy work-from-home offers out there. Transcribe Anywhere was founded by Janet Shaughnessy, a working transcriptionist with more than a decade in the field, and it has trained thousands of students who have gone on to real, paying transcription work — many of whom share their stories on our testimonials page. The free mini-course asks for nothing but your name and email; there is no credit card and no obligation. It is also upfront about the honest realities of the work: what it pays, how long it takes to build skill, and who it isn’t for. We would rather help you decide this isn’t right for you than oversell you something that isn’t.

Can I do transcription part-time, around my family?

Yes — flexibility is one of the biggest reasons people choose this work. Most transcriptionists work as independent contractors, which means you generally choose how much work you take on and when you do it. As long as you meet your deadlines, it usually doesn’t matter whether you work early mornings, late nights, weekends, or in short pockets between other responsibilities. Many of our students started exactly this way: caregivers, parents, and people who needed income without giving up time at home. It is realistic to build this around family life and to scale up your hours later if you choose to.

How much can transcriptionists realistically earn?

Income varies widely based on speed, accuracy, specialization, and your client mix. Beginners working through entry-level platforms typically earn modest hourly rates while building speed. Experienced transcriptionists working directly with private clients, particularly in legal transcription, can earn substantially more, often comparable to or above professional office salaries. Lesson 5 of the mini-course breaks down exactly what affects your income at each stage of your career.

How long does it take to learn transcription?

It depends on your starting skills and how consistently you practice. Most students moving through structured training are working-ready in three to six months for general transcription. Legal transcription typically takes longer because of specialized terminology and formatting requirements. Anyone promising you will be earning full-time income in a few weeks isn’t being honest — transcription is a real skill that rewards real practice.

Who hires transcriptionists today?

Demand comes from law firms, court reporters, academic researchers, journalists, podcasters who need accurate transcripts (not auto-generated), corporate clients, and transcription agencies that subcontract to qualified transcriptionists. Lesson 6 walks through exactly where today’s working transcriptionists find clients, including the channels that have grown stronger as AI has taken over the lower end of the market.

What’s the difference between general and legal transcription?

General transcription covers a broad range of audio: business meetings, interviews, focus groups, academic recordings, and podcasts that need accuracy. Legal transcription is a specialized field focused on legal proceedings — depositions, hearings, examinations under oath, and recorded statements. Legal transcription generally pays higher rates because of the specialization required, including specific formatting standards and legal terminology fluency. Many students start with general transcription and add legal later.

What equipment do I need to start a transcription career from home?

To begin learning, you only need a reliable computer, a decent set of headphones, and an internet connection. Once you start working professionally, you will want a few specific tools: a foot pedal for hands-free audio control, transcription software, and a comfortable workspace setup. Lesson 7 includes the recommended starting equipment list, and none of it is expensive — most people already own most of it.

Can I do transcription work from outside the United States?

Yes. Transcription is location-independent — all you need is a reliable computer, headphones, and an internet connection. We have students working successfully from Canada, the UK, and other countries. A few things to keep in mind: some agencies prefer or require transcriptionists in specific regions, and both pay rates and available work can vary by market and by your fluency with the accents and terminology of the audio. But the core skill travels with you wherever you live.

“I’d worked for a major corporation for 20 years and was burned out. I discovered transcription and knew it was right for me — I was contracting with a company before I’d even finished the course. I’ve now transcribed full-time for 5 years. I make my own schedule, work fewer hours than I did, and earn more than I ever did at the corporate job. Transcribe Anywhere truly changed my life.”
